Dr Chandana B. Herath who is a Senior Research Fellow and an expert hepatologist in the Department of Medicine of the University of Melbourne at Austin Health. Upon completion of his bachelor's degree in veterinary medicine and animal science (BVSc) from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) postgraduate degree from Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand. Dr Herath was then awarded a prestigious fellowship JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) to pursue his postdoctoral studies focusing on deleterious effects of environmentally persistent man-made estrogenic chemicals on reproductive health in the Department of Veterinary Physiology at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Tokyo, Japan. Upon completion of postdoctoral studies in 2004, Dr Herath joined the Department of Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences of the University of Melbourne.

As Head of Hepatology laboratory Dr Herath has made a significant contribution towards developing animal models of liver diseases to study and formulate therapies for patients with liver diseases. Dr Herath has set up an experimental gene therapy laboratory in his department. He was successful in securing nationally competitive grants, amounting to over AU$ 3 million from National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia. He has supervised 11 PhD, 1 MPhil and 4 MD students to successful completion and mentored 4 postdoctoral fellows and 4 RAs, and currently supervises 1 PhD student. Dr Herath has published over 100 scientific publications including peer-reviewed original papers, review papers, book chapters and conference publications, and serves on editorial boards of 2 international journals, Frontiers in Physiology and Journal of Clinical Medicine.
